Default oil change indicator??

Tonight actually right now I am draining the oil on car (977 miles) and am wondering if there is a way to read what the oil life left on the computer is beyond the OnStar report. THe report came to day and showed 91% left on the oil life but I have never gone beyond 1K on a new motor for first oil change.

I looked in the manual and did not find anywhere I could read the oil life left % only how to reset it which is same as just about all GM products.

Anyway to know

After the next oil change I will then switch to synthetic.

If you hold down the left wheel on the steering wheel and turn on the key it will put you in the Engineering mode. You can see this in the information center on the dash. If you scroll down you will see the percentage of oil along with some other goodies.

ok for starters! why are you changeing the first oil out so early. gm will tell you to run the first oil for the full amount! 3000 to 5000 miles. there have been many gto drivers that have changed there 1st oil out early and there engine started useing oil real early. i mean in the teens not the 100,000 mile range. i ran my first oil for 5000 miles and drove it like i stole it for the first 5000 miles. and at a little under 85000 miles my engine still does not leak nor burn a drop of oil between changes of 5000 miles. i ran a 5000 mile interval between oil changes until 62000 miles and thats when i did the mods. then i went to 3500 mile intervals. i have had many new vehicals from gm and i have never had one burn oil early. i have always ran and believe in a 5000 mile 1st oil change. now when your oil change light does come on, and you just changed your oil. all you have to do is turn on the key, but not start it. press the gas pedal down 3 times real quick, then turn off the key and restart it and it will go off. also do not to start useing the synthetic oil to soon as you have to allow the rings to seat. that is why you run the first oil for 5000 miles. it does not hurt anything.

I let the dealer change my first oil at 1000 miles plus they did a complete check of the trans and everything else. At about 5000 miles I put Mobil 1 in it and I won't change it again until next year.

I just hit 5000 kms yesterday. I also just picked up a 2001 Blazer, as I want to protect my GT - ie not drive in winter, carry heavy scuba tanks etc, hell I don't even like driving in the rain becaus it gets dirty! At this rate, based on the manual/oil life computer, I'm gonna be a once a year oil change. To me, that seems wrong? Should I follow the computer? Change at 5000 kms (like every other car I have ever owned)? At work, we do the oil between 12000-15000 kms - and that's on hard driven police crown vics. Also, what's the word on winter storage for 4-5 months?

1500 miles for my first and 5500 on the second. Would love to know how changing the oil early has attributed to burning oil shortly after? typically the 5.7 LS engines(04 GTO's, 4th gen F-body, C5's) have had oil burning issues regardless of what schedule you choose with the oil changes. You will see a puff of white smoke emit after a hard run everytime. I believe alot of the oil burning issues have been addressed on the newer Gen IV engines. My G8 L76 or my Trailblazer SS LS2 have or had any issues with burning oil.

"white smoke" is NOT oil.. its water introduced in the combustion process. Burning oil emits a BLUE smoke. Black smoke is excess fuel being burned.
