Popping or Cluncking Sound in Front End
Took the 8 in for its 3.7K check up and oil change (Free) and spoke to the dude at the counter about the popping noise I have while turning sharply at slow speeds. This bugger hooker didn't have clue and blew me off so I asked for the manager which was not there at the time (funny how that happens). During my stay I seen a guy walking around looking important and talking to the guys working on the cars. So I waited tell he came out of the garage and struck up a conversation and guess who he is . The Service Manager so I told him about my problem and the fact that according to his counter dude he was AWOL and couldn't be found. He was less than happy when he looked at the clerk who looked a little worried . Anyways he did some poking around and found a document on G8s with a Vin prior to 8L150898 having a clunking sound and the fix. He had one of his crew drive the car and verify the problem and they now have the parts on order.
The document is #08-03-08-004 (TSB?) Replace both front stabilizer shaft insolators. Now I'm not a suspension expert by far so can one our members that knows what the heck these things do explain it to me? I would be most gratefull Thanks.
PS: I also seen a 09 G8 GT in the new dark red metal flake ...... Very nice.

hello! well for starters a tsb is a technical service bulletin. for thing that ahve gone wrong on the car for many other owners like you that the producers did not find when the car came out.
as for the insolators, they are rubber inserts to help cushion the stabilizers from metal to metal.

You should read (ODD NOISE), it sounds like this is a problem. I know it is with my G8. I guess I'll be back at the dealership next week.

Ok, it seems that the TSB indeed did fix the popping sound in the frount end. Now will see if it lasts or if the sound comes back after a while.

I spoke with the service department at the dealership last Friday (August 1) they had received the TSB, they have ordered the part, which they said would take about 2 weeks to receive. Question - they claim the car is safe to drive, does anyone know any different? They also told me that GM is hoping that this will fix the problem.

I dont have the issue yet, only 1900 miles, but if I do I will put poly bushings or Pedders suspension to fix permanently.

It's baaaaack! I'll be taking the car back this week for other issues (Traction Control problem and noisy trim on back windows) so I'll see what they have to say then.

Sorry to hear that the problem is back (noise). Question - how much of a time flame was it between the time they fixed the problem ( so they thought) and when the problem returned?
I am still waiting for the parts to arrive, the dealer said 2 weeks, it has now been 4 weeks.
My dealer did tell me in the beginning that they, meaning (GM) was not sure that this was going to fix the problem.
What is your dealer telling you now and originally how long did it take them to get the parts in?

It took about a month for the noise to return. As far as the parts are concerned it took a week or so for them to come in.
My traction control has switched off several times while driving. It can not be reset until the car cools down for a while. In fact it did it again today on the way home from work. I have been to busy to get it into the shop but I need to soon.

This the best write up I have found to explain it (from GRRRR8's Forum).
If you have a clunk noise in your front suspension, check your front sway bar mounting bushings. There is a new TSB regarding this for the G8 through the VIN breakpoint listed below.
It involves replacing the front insulator bushings on the sway bar with an updated part:
92219337 Insulator, Front Stabilizer Bar (Shaft) 2
#08-03-08-004: Clunk Noise From Front of Vehicle (Replace Front Stabilizer Shaft Insulators (Bushings)) - (May 19, 2008)
Subject:Clunk Noise From Front of Vehicle (Replace Front Stabilizer Shaft Insulators (Bushings))
Models:2008 Pontiac G8 Built Prior to VIN Breakpoint 8L150898
Hope this helps,
Jim

Ah, yes, great...thanks. I fall into that category, but mine isn't making any noise. I'll crawl under it today and take a peek....thanks again!

My dealer replaced the front stabilizer insulators at the beginning of Sept., I picked the car up on a Friday the noise was back on the following Tuesday. I have made them aware that the noise has returned, at this point no one has the answer how to correct or for that matter what the problem may be. Question - has any one else experienced the same thing? They still claim the car is safe to drive.

I'm getting the same story from my dealer. the sound has gotten worse since they replaced the parts. i'm waiting for some other parts to come in and then I will discuss it with the service manager again. Hopefully I will not have to pull the lemon law card.
