The onstar box is under the rear deck inside the trunk (hanging below it towards the driver side)

Well since my finance contract (here in TX) gives them (The bank or anyone they assign the contract to) permission to find the car if its equipped with any type of gps tracking gear.. I think THAT would be the problem!!! I paid my car off 3 days after I financed it.. but contractual agreements are always up to the interpretation of the holder.. and this way, I don't have to worry about it.

So what happens if you're in an accident on a back road in Tx's and the hill-billie cops can't find you?
Or, what if your car has a code...Onstar can tell you what it is....or...your car gets stolen....don't you want them to find it before they hack it up?
I would think onstar is a good thing....or you lock your keys in the car...onstar can unlock the car for you.....so many good things it can do.....

where?
My Dl has a PO Box and I never give out my physical address. Too many weirdos out there. And do you know how simple it is for the thief to disable onstar.. took me 10 seconds... Alarms and locks keep honest people honest... well at least locks do.. Alarms.. well they are pretty much useless..

1. The same thing we used to do for the last 100 years. wait.
2. Onstar is not LoJack.
3. Onstar is a division of GM. They can determine that you have been racing and void your warranty. They can determine if you have been speeding before an accident, which might shift the legal blame and cause financial hardship.
You call it a good thing, I call it big brother. I'll be disconnecting mine as soon as I can.

2. OnStar programs you lose when you disconnet the VCIM.
Automatic Crash Response
Automatic Air Bag Deployment Response
Emergency Services
OnStar Hands-Free Calling (first 30 minutes free)
OnStar Turn-by-Turn Navigation
Stolen Vehicle Assistance
Remote Door Unlock
Roadside Assistance
Crisis Assist (Hurricane Katrina, Rita, Ike, etc...)
Remote Horn and Lights
Ride Assist (when you cant drive)
3. Might shift? So the speeding driver is not to blame?
Add twilight zone music here dooo doooo dooo dooo
You might want to disconnect your SDM which also might capture accident data.
Are you in the witness protection program?
Your choice to disconnect, but there are some real valuable features that Onstar offers.

Also sometimes called the EDR...
GM - Safety - Event Data Recorders
Even if you thought disconnecting your OnStar was your ticket to litigation-free driving, they'd get you!
P.S. And careful not to drive by any security cameras...

The EDR is housed in the SDM.
Disconnecting the VICM (ONSTAR) is not possible on many models due the intergration of modules on the high speed LAN line.
If you are in the witness protection program and want to disable the system, you would be best served by disconnecting the ONSTAR antenna, not the module.

all eng1neer said was, "there's an antenna connection there that needs pulling" (to keep them from locating it), not disconnecting the whole thing and messing up all of the other programs it performs. Yeah I can see pros and cons to both side's arguments

Jim,
I know you soundly support the General, but do you honestly believe that OnStar helped ANYONE during Hurricane Katrina? And do you also believe that the speeding driver is always at fault (vice the drunk, the 90 year old that ran the stop sign, the 14 year old joy riding)?
For all of those cool features, I have another cool device. It's called a cell phone. Before I had that, I had...other drivers, and fellow humans.
I'm just not 'wow'ed by this particular service and thought it particularly odd that the dealer had to go through the entire sales pitch, even after I told them I did not want it. He never explained where my spare tire was...he made damn sure that he told me how to add minutes to my onstar plan.
Also a side note to anyone who has tried using Roadside assistance...They will only tow you to the nearest dealership (not home). It is your responsibility to get home or to a hotel. I have been left in Houston at 2AM because this was the limit of thier responsibility. (And no, you do not need Onstar to make a roadside assistance claim)
Witness protection...No. But I will not be Sheeple
Thanks but no thanks,
Todd

Crisis assist, can help people trapped in a major disasaster. They will direct you to evacuation centers, hospitals, evacuation routes, contact loved ones for you, real time hotel availability, pet shelters, plus lots of other stuff.
Available in english, spanish, or french.
Onstar call volume always increases during hurricane events in the gulf coast area.
OnStar Opens 'Crisis Assist' Emergency Services to Those Affected by Gustav | Reuters
Speeding is a major contributor to motor vehicle accidents. Dont you think the 14 year old joy rider would be speeding? I did when at 14, I took my sisters 1968 Firebird for a 200 mile joy ride.
How do you use your cell phone when you are unconscious?
Onstar is not for everyone, but most people will want the security of knowing someone will be there if they are needed. Heck, the first year is free for Safe and Sound.
The sales person was not doing their job correctly, to busy trying to sell you something instead of following the delivery procedures.
You are correct that they will only tow you to the nearest dealership.
Todd, from HPD? This internet thing makes this a small world. lol

Lets be honest here, how many people actually renew there OnStar subscriptions after their free year runs out? I know when mine expires next April, I will not be renewing mine.

There is a dead end plug that replaces the VCIM wiring harness if you dont want on-star , by using it the rest of the car in not looking for the module.
And by the way , on-star in GM low speed LAN.
All crash data is recorded buy the SDM , that is the air-bag module under the drivers seat , its your choice if you dont want that.
