2008 Pontiac G8 GT vs. 2008 Dodge Charger R/T - Head to Head - Motor Trend
Wide smiles and pumping upraised thumbs, animated gas-station conversations, love letters on the windshield, other motorists orbiting like subatomic electrons-for its week-long stay the G8 existed at the epicenter of a vortex of adulation and when's-it-on-sale interest. For good reason, too. This bold new four-door-bred and built by GM's Holden division in Australia-gets the big stuff right: sleek, aggressive proportions; front air dam with foglights standard; racy hood scoops (only for looks, alas); smart engine choices; and, most important, a rear-drive layout. It's the four-door Pontiac aficionados have been waiting for, a Grand Prix replacement BMW devotees didn't know they'd be examining with such a curious mixture of admiration and concern. Also, the G8 intentionally lines up directly against the broad shoulders of Dodge's rear-drive Charger. Always up for a good face-off, we got the two cars together for a rubber-melting scrimmage.

This is great! You want to talk about some pissed off people, go over to some of the Dodge Charger sites and look around. They are Pissed!

You are right. This car has the whole car enthusiast community abuzz. I read some posts, and there is a lot of denial.

I note in the Edmunds article of Challenger vs. Camaro they state the Camaro will be built in Oz along side the G8.
Did I miss something? GM said Oshawa, Canada.

Yeah I was just checking those out...HILARIOUS. Funny how every car online seems to go 12.9 in the quarter mile "with someone who knows how to drive...with better traction....blah blah blah"
I'm floored that people think the charger is a better looking car...the G8 is clean, pure, and sophisticated. The charger looks like a bloated inflatable yard decoration that makes the drivers look like they have tiny heads. (see silver charger, above pic)
Charger: Too big, too ugly, too "one-wheel-drive" for me.

i don't get how they can blame the driver in an AUTOMATIC transmission. even in 'manual' mode they are still going to respond the same. and really in MotorTrend the G8 was losing every race by a 1/2 car length. i think the charger people know that at the end of every straight is a corner, and then they lose badly

Guys, I am here because I love the G8, but lets get real, these 2 cars are damned close and looks are int the eye of the beholder. I personally prefer the look of the Charger with Road and Track package over the G8, but the g8 over the base R/T. Motor trends times for the R/T and the G8 were damned close, 13.9@102.8 for the G8 and 14.0@102 for the R/T, that is basically a drivers race. Also, it's a matter of opinion (and neither are really close to the SRT8, Motor trend got a 13.2@109 and that is slower than a lot of owners are getting, though their time for the Charger R/T seems right on). that Insideline test goes against most articles i have read on most cars, also their Charger did not have the higher performance road and track package which makes the Charger R/T handle MUCH MUCH better. Also the Charger is do for a mid cycle refresh in a few years, and I would not be surprised to see the new Hemi that makes 380 HP in the 09 Ram and 370-375 in the 09 Challenger R/T find it's way into the 09 Charger R/T, effectively swinging the acceleration pendulum in the other direction. i personally love both cars and would happy with either, as long as the pontiac quality is better than it was on my 00 GTP which i just sold.......

i view the chargers chassis , in terms of dynamics on par if not slightly below the GTO chassis ( gm281x)
the Zeta is clearly technicaly superior to both of the above in terms of luxury smoothness, great linear handling and steering feel.

Having driven both, they feel quite different. You sit much lower relative to the IP in the Charger, and it simply feels like a larger, less precise car. The G8 feels more European. Somewhat odd, since the Charger is based on a Mercedes.
Which is better? It's a matter of taste. I personally prefer the G8 for cleaner (if more derivative) styling, better forward visibility, and more precise steering/handling.
