US-spec headlights
I've noticed that every pre-production G8 (from the original show car to virtually every G8 that has been spotted in the US) has sported the projector-style headlights, which I love.
However, I noticed the Motor Trend Pontiac advo section features the G8 in apparent production trim (taillights now have reflectors integrated into the sides) and the projector headlights are gone! In their place are cheaper ones like those featured on the base Commodore SS:
What gives, Pontiac?
I know this is nitpicking, but I prefer the look (and light pattern) of the projector lights:

Maybe that picture was of a pre-production G8 with SS lights in it. Because Pontiac.com says it is getting Projectors.

It will come with projector headlamps according to the Pontiac Details book.
How long before someone comes out with a HID system? It probably won't be long.

Yeah, I went back and looked at the specs on pontiac.com and it does say projector lamps. But you know how they always put in the disclaimer, "specifications subject to change." It just seems odd that after all the pre-productions cars we've seen had projector lamps, and now the most recent photo provided by Pontiac has the car without them. Hope you guys are right.
Regarding the HIDs, I would at least expect the GXP to have them. Hopefully, they'll be an option in the future. That's another thing about the headlights I'm disappointed about. Seems like a $30,000 car these days should have HID.

The car in that spread was not US-spec correct. All G8s come with projectors and the Commodore's big spoiler won't be offered.
An Aussie already took pictures of G8s being loaded for shipment and they all have projectors.

Its typical human behavior to create things to worry about when there is nothing there. Its like fighting boredom. They start complaining, worrying, and otherwise whining because they can think of nothing better to do.
Myself, I can't wait to see it up close and give it a test drive. I'll reserve any complaining or concerns until that moment. Inventing things to worry....well you get the idea.

Wow. What a friendly message board.
Apparently, questions aren't allowed, because that's considered whining? It's not like there was NOTHING there. The headlights in Pontiac's own advertisement are clearly different. It's not like manufacturers have never changed specifications before. So I'm wondering if anyone had information to confirm the projector headlights (which someone thankfully did).
If you weren't referring to me, I apologize, but if you were, then please don't post here anymore if you don't have something constructive to contribute.

And now....back to the subject of headlights. Does anyone know how the DRLs work on this car? Is it the highbeam bulbs, lowbeam bulbs, a seperate bulb or the parking lights, that are used?
Thanks.

Even more importantly, anyone know to disable them? Or will there be a switch, as there are on many current GM models, that allow you to turn them off? It looks like, from some of the interior shots I've seen, that you'll be able to turn them off by rotating the headlight knob to the left of the off position.

Usually on the signal lever there is a "off" option. Some cars turn off the headlights when you turn on the fog lights in the day time. I do that, I think it looks better hehe.

Yeah, but the G8's headlight switch won't be on the turn signal stalk. Look at that rotary knob to the left of the steering wheel on the dash. There's 4 positions, with "Auto" being the likely default Off position. Probably, if you want to turn the DRLs off, you click the knob left to the O position. Also, it looks like to turn the fog lights on, you pull the knob out (toward you). This is the same setup Audi uses.

Stalk or knob, usually there is an off option. Typically, its the O. Auto keeps DRLs on at all times, and activates the rest when it gets darker.

I don't like the DRLs, i think they waste. When's the last time you saw a 99-06 silverado or sierra with both DRLs working?

That's why there'e an off switch.
They do make cars more visible though. And since the lights don't always activate in the rain, it at least guarantees that you can see someone coming when visibility is lower.
But if ya really don't like the idea, you can blame Canada They gave us the idea.

IF it is anything like my TBSS, there is an easy relay fix to the DRL that will still allow the auto lights to work when it is dark.

I know my GTO had the option of turning off the DTR and also could run parking lights and fog lamps together.

This procedure was drawn up for HID's but I am sure can be done for standard headlights as well...
Ok here is a short version to bypass your daytime running lights:
You'll need a SPDT 30-40A relay.(single pole double throw)
First you have to tap the pink wire at the back of your head light switch
(this throws a negative when you turn your headlights on). Run this wire
through the large grommet to the left of your brake pedal and route it to
behind the driver's headlight. Connect this wire to pin 85 on your relay.
Next you'll need to connect a wire to constant power. You can get this either
at the battery or under the factory fuse cover that is under the hood.
Use the bolt to the left of the 125 amp fuse. Make sure you use your own
inline fuse on this wire(20 amp works fine). Connect this wire to pins 30&86 on
your relay.
Last connect 2 wires to pin 87 on your relay (1 goes to the power on the
Driver's side ballast & the other goes to the power on the passenger side ballast).
Ground the black (or ground wire) on each ballast.
Mount the ballasts and install your bulbs and you are done.
