Default What are the Austrailian Zeta models?

I know that the Pontiac G8 will be a slightly modified VE SS. However, I'm very confused about the various models offered by Holden that are the same platform.

Could somebody explain the various models that the Pontiac G8 is based on(Commodore, Senator, GTS, VE SS, R8, etc).

Thanks!

IIRC, the G8 is more or less a VE Commodore, which is the basis for the Zeta platform for GM. The VE Commodore has something like 6 or 7 different variants, one of which is the Commodore SS which seems to be the flavor used in the G8.

So, the short answer is that it's the SS variant that is what will become our G8.

you have the Short wheelbase models , and then you have the LWB models

see diagram below (although it might not be exactly accurate)

Thanks cm_ls1, that was exactly what I was looking for. I didn't realize that Holden built so many models.

I really love the tail lights on the GTS....drool.

oh , dont forget 2 more models to throw in the LWB list when they come out - the UTE , and the Wagon

Interesting to see some of the recycled names GM has used in the US previously.

Omega and Calais were used on Oldsmobiles (Calais was also used on Cadillac). Caprice was a Chevrolet model.

I also notice some of Holden's other/former models had use in the US as well:

Nova, Kingswood and Suburban were/are Chevrolets
Apollo and Special were Buicks
Sunbird was a Pontiac

All to make you wonder, just what's in a name?

The Cafe standards are already having impact on production models going to rwd. I would still like to see at least one long wheel base RWD model make it to the US.

I would have expected Cadillac to utilize the LWD architecture for an updated DTS/Deville. That leaves the door open for the next Caprice of Buick to use it.

With the new CAFE 34 mpg targets GM will need to consider the money needed to develop that type of product verses long leed investment in high mpg technology such as diesel truck engines. Oh well, you can alway import a used Caprice from Saudi.
